The 3 machines I have used it on are all Windows Sever 2008 R2 Enterprise version. I am not aware of Virtual PC...

ok, I tested it on my Win7 Sp2 x64 and I can't see such an option. Maybe this option is only available for XP or Vista 32Bit systems? Windows Sever 2008 R2 Enterprise is x64 and VPC can't handle 64Bit Guests, so maybe this is the cause.

I have no idea. The help is also confusing about this topic:

-h   Fix up the HAL in the VHD to be compatible with Virtual PC (Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 only).
