Hi Smart71,

the correct key is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

With this you can get only  following Versions:

Microsoft Windows 2000 (No different between Pro and Server)
Microsoft Windows XP (No different between Home and Pro)
Microsoft Windows Server 2003

OK Smart71,

I get it, the exactly Version is written in the "prodspec.ini" File.
You could find the File under:

%systemroot%\system32\prodspec.ini

Edit the File and you will find the exact Version under the Key:

[Product Specification]
Product=Windows XP Professional

for Example

Boot.ini also contains the info...
use magicaljellybean.com keyfinder or belarc advisor or everest or WinKey + Pause/Break and access System Properties or start | run DXDIAG or start | run Msinfo32

Hi i4one,

Boot.ini contains the Info only if you have Dual Boot or cmdcons installed and could be modified with Textentry what ever you want.
For example: This is my Windows

If you change the prodspec.ini File you get many Problems.

All other Places you`ll find the Information are not scriptable if you want to create a Batchfile.

OK you can create vb, java, C++ .... or other Script to get it.

You may also read ProductType and ProductSuite values in key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Produc tOptions
to get info about which OS version (Workstation/Professional, Web, Server or Advanced/Enterprise) is installed.
