Well, this should be a lesson for you to not to go disabling that for which you are not 100% sure it's safe to be disabled!!

Exact same thing happened to me.

Ivan needs to get off his highhorse.  When you have a PC that won't do much because it has been infected you don't have much choice. (BTW - don't lecture me on protecting my PC, it wasn't mine that I was working on)

I was able to correct the problem using the BartPE / RegEdit fix.  The problem was in the software hive.  Not sure but I think it was because the HKLM\SW\MS\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\UserInit key had been disabled.  I disabled it because it had a strange value in it, I restored it to UserInit.exe based on what my other machines said and everything came back.

I can't say for sure that it was that key because I restored some other keys in that hive as well, but that is the only one that stuck out as being wrong.

OK.. I am in the same situation... My PC won't boot... It starts to splash the XP screen and then BSODs. I have the boot drive removed from the machine and it is attached to another machine so I can (back it up and then) operate on it.

Is it possible to run regedit in this situation?

EDIT -- OK - I found in some of the other articles that I can run regedit, import the hive, etc...

Looking through what has been disabled, it all looks pretty harmless (i.e. nothing important seems listed as disabled). I guess my fear is that some of the registry items that have no real definition may be doing me in???

I did disable a bunch of bluetooth stuff... but can that be killing me?

Hi dbren,
It starts to splash the XP screen and then BSODs
To be clear, then - this came about after you unchecked or removed something with Autoruns?  What was it?

Perhaps something in the "BSOD" will be useful in pointing out what settings to attempt to restore - can you give more details?

Yes... it happened after I unchecked something (and I didn't think I did anything severe - guess not). I made a few changes, but then didn't reboot for a few days - so I have forgotten what all of th echanges were (I generally nuked thinks like realplay, itunes, adobe, acronis, etc...)BSOD is a stop code of 7b. Not too descriptive.

7B is INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

dude, i owe you so much for this guide, this saved so many hours of work, and it will continue to be of great use to me in the future.  Thank you so much for posting this tutorial on re-enabling processes that were disabled by autoruns.  If it wasn't for the spyware/adware jerks who would also read this, i'd say that this should be included in the Autoruns tutorial/help file.
