@Molotov, I need some assistance with the last task you asked of me, the unchecking of the entry C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\UPnPUI.dll

First, I can only locate this in the Everything tab. When I read instructions on use of Autoruns it basically says to only use the Logon tab in most situations. I suppose my question is two fold:

First, is it OK to uncheck it on the Everything tab, and do I then need to do it for each account on the system? From the User tab? Then, I suppose I would need to perform a reboot in order to get this module to not load, correct? Sorry I am so inexperienced, Embarrassed  I just don't want to go ahead with this without knowing for sure if it is the correct action, as I read some pretty scary threads at the Autoruns forum of people who did just that, and had some horrific consequences. I only move forward after learning if it is OK to do a task. Even if it takes me days to discover whether it is the correct action. Big%20smile

Oh, I did need to profile Autoruns in DW in order to pull it up and be able to work in it, right? Or, is there an easier method of working with Autoruns inside of DW? We have done so much, I forget. Embarrassed

I await your instruction, thank you,   Seree

Since Autoruns will only launch on your system when it is run from within a debugger, I figured DW was a bit lighter-weight than WinDbg.  Wink  So, yes - launch it from DW, so you can interact with it and use it to uncheck the entry.

What section (HKLM\???, etc.) on the Everything tab does UPNPUI.DLL show up under (you should be able to select the line and press CTRL+C to copy it, then paste it here)?

@Molotov, here it is:

Universal Plug and Play DevicesUPnPUI Module Sonic Solutions c:\program files\common files\roxio shared\9.0\sharedcom\upnpui.dll

I can not locate this on the Logon tab, only the Everything tab, is that odd? Should I go ahead and uncheck it for every account, then reboot?

Thank you,  Seree

What section does it show up under?  I'm looking for something like HKLM\Software\Classes\AllFileSystemObjects\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers, HKLM\Software\Classes\Directory\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers, HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved, etc.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved.
That should be on the "Explorer" tab.   That would be safe to uncheck (doesn't matter where you uncheck it from - Explorer or Everything), and you should only need to do it once, from the account you are using, as it resides in HKLM.  Rebooting after unchecking would be desirable. Smile

@Molotov, OK, did it, and it still has the same error. Unhappy

I had hoped.......but, that would be just too easy. Wink

So, would you conclude that while that Roxio UPnP is part, but not all of the issue? It would be very nice to locate the faulty components, that way we have information on how to assist others, plus, we can let Roxio know there is an issue, and perhaps, yeah right, but maybe, Roxio will create a patch. Roxio is really pushing its EMC 10 currently, so they would probably just tell people to upgrade. Even though that would cost at least, another $70.00, plus tax. Roxio is not really well known for help and service, but the modules do a great job. When they work correctly, that is.

So, anything else you would like me to attempt before I begin removing EMC 9? If so, I am happy to oblige, as it teaches me a lot. I forget some of what we do because we have done so much stuff which is new for me, but I am still learning. I think I may be interested in learning programming! I am so "into" computers these days, I just want to know everything about them, how they work, how software works, hardware too. My curiosity is enormous! Big%20smile My husband is happy I have a "hobby" but has to pull me off the computer which is does not like at all. Ha-ha! I went from knowing literally, nothing, didn't even know how to turn one on, to building my own,  and testing WHS, and now I do moderate troubleshooting, fix our systems, but I want to know it all. Sorry to get off track, I try to keep these posts short, but I tend to be a talker. Embarrassed

Thank you,   Seree

I can't say I've got much more to offer, in terms of suggestions.  If you are inclined to remove Roxio 9.0, feel free to do so (please report back on your results if you do!).  It is difficult to determine the precise interaction that the Roxio components have with Autoruns that causes this behavior - are the Roxio components detecting that they are being loaded / "used" by a non-Roxio product and bailing for some reason?  And the effort of disabling / enabling specific modules would be tedious to most, at best.

@Molotov, well, it is a good thing your troubleshooting is now over, well, nearly, as the mystery is solved.  Thumbs%20Up

I just finished fully and completely removing every Roxio and Sonic item on my system, and when I ran Autoruns, it did not error. So, we now have two forum members who have gotten rid of the error by removing Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 and the error was resolved. I think that pretty much confirms that it is Roxio who is at fault here.

Whew! That was quite the job too! Much more difficult to remove this version than the OEM limited version this system came with.

I am glad we have a culpret, but not pleased with which program it turned out to be. Cry  I now have to decide which program gets to live on my system, Roxio or Autoruns. Bummer!

I am relieved EMC 10 runs fine on WinXP MCE, I hope it does on Vista, because that is the OS version 10 is slated to be installed on, not this one. Do you remember which OS the other forum member who removed version 9, and installed version 10 was using? I think it was XP MCE. Drat. It still won't be for a while before I finish my Vista machine because I want a good sound card, and am waiting for finances to improve to buy one.

Anyway, we know now it is Roxio, just not the particular modules. That would be great to figure out, but don't knock yourself out attempting, as you don't have EMC 9, and while I am willing to work with you, or rather, you work through me, to locate the exact faulting module(s), I doubt you would want to go to all that trouble, and I don't blame you.

Thank you Molotov for all of your assistance, you went far and above the call of duty on this one!

Sincerely,   Seree

P.S. Unless you say otherwise, I am now going to reinstall Roxio EMC 9 on my machine. I think! LOL

as the mystery is solved
Well, it seems that the general application suite has an impact on the ability of Autoruns to function.  The specific component(s) remain unidentified.

Do you remember which OS

Slowhelix was running XP SP2.

Thank you Molotov for all of your assistance
You're welcome, Seree.

It's your machine, and you are most certainly welcome to do with it whatever you wish... Wink
