I'm getting something similar.  I created VHD and then installed Virtual PC 2007 SP1 on same machine, create vmc and attached vhd.  I am getting "Master Boot Record Error".  Is this vhd supposed to be able to run on XP with VPC2007SP1 or will it only run on Win7?  I was hoping to test before wiping this machine and installing Win7

Have you tried booting with Virtualbox instead of VirtualPC?

Some of the posts seem to say an issue with some versions of Virtual PC.  Virtualbox may be the trick for now.

Yep, tried VirtualBox and it just hangs with the black boot screen.  I think this utility is hosed and until they issue a patch, it's worthless.

This may be a stupid question, but has anyone tried booting from the WinXP disc and doing an in-place installation?  Desperately need a machine I converted up.  I can mount the VHD so I guess if worse comes to worse I can copy the files out but dang.

Well I at least got my machine up and running using an In-place Repair/installation.  Hopefully the Utility is fixed to actually do a real p2v conversion.

Hi all,

i found the solution:

Start VM with the XP cdrom in the player.
boot from cd-rom and press R this will load the recovery console
login with local administrator password of the VM
goto system32 directory, cd system32
type:  expand d:\i386\halacpi.dl_  and press enter
type:  copy halacpi.dll hal.dll  and press enter, type Y to overwrite
reboot the VM
boot in normal mode and update all drivers, this is a automated proces, but check it
reboot again in normal mode
install VM additions

and see, you got your old VM back in business, but now virtual !!

I wanted to reply to state that replacing my hal.dll seemed to fix the booting issue with a boot vhd i created with disk2vhd. i just had to boot it into safe mode to remove a couple hasp device drivers.

thanks for the solution!

We have done extensive testing on many systems at our disposal without issue. If you figure out what's wrong in your particular configuration, please let us know so that we can address it.

So far I've had no luck with my Server 2003 VHD.  I tried the halacpi.dll trick, but that didn't work at all.  I was able to install Server 2003 on top of itself (repair), which worked.  But that kinda defeats the purpose of the tool.

The original box I used disk2vhd was using Server 2003 R2 standard edition, SP2 (32bit).  Intel Xeon CPU X5450 with 4gb ram.
