For quite a while now, after working for several hours at my PC (Windows XP Professional, SP2, AMD64 3400+, 2GB RAM), especially after doing rather complex things like image processing, the system starts to throw ominous errors about insufficient system resources or not enough memory at the simpliest actions (like opening a Windows Explorer window).
Either there is a message box presenting the error message (which always sounds more or less the same: not enough resources / memory / RAM or some messages obviously arising from that like "class not found"), or you can just hear the windows error sound and the window just doesn't open (or some controls are missing or incomplete or the like).
When I then close a window I can afterwards open another one in exchange, but sometimes I have to close two or three. Consequently, after a while, I need to reboot, 'cos there are only very few programs left working properly.

In fact, there is always enough free RAM memory (700 - 800 MB) available, according to the Windows Task Manager, or electively, the Process Explorer, let alone enough free space in the swap file.

On account of some hints I got from another forum, I resized the swap file once or twice and transfered it onto another HDD, but this didn't seem to have any effect.

I even replaced the RAM bars by another one (which is 100% working correctly in the system I've taken it from), but the problem arises nevertheless.

The result is that I have to restart the PC several times a day causing very annoying pauses where I have to save all the open files, wait for the system to reboot and try to get back to work.

I installed the system on the (at that time) new machine one and a half years ago and despite this problem everything works fine.

Can anyone here help me? I just don't have the time to format and reinstall the system, plus all the installed programs... it would take me a week or so to do so...

    1. HI There,

I understand your problem, and i may be able to help solve it.

There are many reasons for windows to display those messages:

  1. There may be a virus in your system and is actually taking all the memory, but editing task manager and Process Explorer to always show there is sufficient memory, but there is not, causing Windows to display those messages.
  2. You hard disk is corrupt, i will tell you how to solve it later on,
  3. There may be a virus that has corrupted the Windows Explorer files and is displaying fake error messages.

How to resolve a virus:

Boot in to safe mode (restart computer --> keep pressing F8 --> when the boot options menu appears select 'safe mode' with arrow keys and press  enter.

Logon to Windows. DO a virus scan with your antivirus scanner.

To resolve a hard disk error:

Run CHKDSK /f from a command promt: Click start --> Run --> Type cmd --> Press OK --> Type chkdsk /f in the command window.

If a message asks you to schedule the scan when you reboot your computer then hit 'y' on the keyboard, press enter and restart your comp.

Another way to check the disk , is to boot in to safe mode with command prompt: Restart computer --> keep pressing F8 --> when the boot options menu appears select 'safe mode with command promt' with the arrow keys and hit enter.

At the command promt type 'autochk'(without the quotes) and hit enter.

This may solve your problem, if not then you need yo reformat the disk, save your program installers directly from the Program Files folder in C:\,(to a floppy or USB) then save all your files to a floppy or USB.

Thankyou

of course you can my friend
it is very simple. you should guess, tried clicking?

first going to topic named "explorer cannot start" - problem with virus, that was a reason of insufficient resources

second to "Insufficient Resources" where many peoples discuss about this problem (not related to virus activity)
