Yes. I've got this too... damn annoying.
I've expended some time trying to find a solution... comes and goes... makes the music, movie, mouse, or anything, very choppy, etc. DPC usage doesn't need to rise above 5% in order to impede critical tasks.
My observations are just like everyone else's: ~30-40% DPC usage spikes over period of 5-10 minutes, themselves occuring at irregular intervals.
New Dell Dimension 8400 + P4 3.? GHz HT + Nvidia GeForce 6800 (with updated drivers 77.77).
May try to install updated chipset drivers (Intel® 925X Express Chipset Family) but kind of scared of the effects.
Thanks for the tip about kernrate. Will continue to explore this tool.
I also found RATTV3 (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/tools/RATT.mspx)to be a promising tool for finding the root cause of this issue (what do I know I'm not a driver programmer).

Good luck

Hmm...., I can now count to at least 6 people with Dell Dim 8400/Geforce 6800, all having this issue. Interesting that Dell support won't touch it! To me, they just refer to the software support centre (that you have to pay!).

I did try and update to the latest chipset drivers from Intel, but without success. I was thinking that perhaps it was the PCI express drivers, rather than the graphic card drivers themselves that was the issue, but I guess not.

I have become very, very tired of this thing now, so I have bought a new graphic card, an ATI Radeon card this time. I will install it tomorrow and let you know if it solved the problem.

Same problem. Dimension 8400/GeForce 6800. Here I was, thinking I had damaged it somewhere. Anxious to see if swapping video cards helped.

Hi,

I've got exactly the same problem: Dell Dim 8400/Geforce 6800, excessive CPU use due to DPC's; usually starts about ten mins after startup and occurs occasionally thereafter. Dell support no help at all, can't believe I paid over £1000 for this!

Also very tired of trying to sort this out, and also waiting anxiously to see if video card swap makes any difference!!!!

Ran RATTV3 on my system last night. It filtered through and showed that videoprt.sys is taking an excessive amount of time on its DPCs. Where all the other drivers had DPC execution time on the order of microseconds, videoprt.sys had execution times from microseconds to tens of milliseconds. So yes, I would say the video card is the culprit.

I told Dell about this last night; I don't expect them to do anything useful. The technician referred me to customer care to see if I could get an exchange. Before that, I might try changing out the video card myself.

grasak, use the Recovery Console to re-enable the service. The Microsoft Knowledge Base has more information on the steps required.

I called Dell (lack of) support last night.  Beddy Beddy good!  The woman I talked to at least said dell now acknowledges the problem of 8400 systems with the geforce 6800 card.  They offered to replace the 6800... with another one!  Dunno how that's going to help.  I agree it is the geforce driver causing all the DPC's that periodically clog the system. The sysinternals Process Explorer tells you for sure that the problem is DPC's - question is where they are coming from.  I have tried several versions of the driver, both from Dell and from nVidia's site, no luck.  Last night they told me to go into msconfig and turn off the Load Startup Items in the Selective startup on the General tab, then turn on only the essential services on the Startup tab.  That got me a few hours respite, but now it's back with a vengeance.  I just ordered an ATI Radeon X300SE 256MB PCI Express.  A lot less card I know, but only $70 on ebay and that should answer the question for sure if it is the nvidia card.  It'll be here in 2-3 days... will let y'all know...   (Keep pounding on Dell!)

Update.

It works !!

I replaced the GeForce 6800 with a ATI Radeon X550 (256 MB) PCIexpress. I have now worked with the computer for a few hours, and I have had no problems whatsoever. In fact, I even have the impression that it works better with the new card, than during the periods when the 6800 worked normally. Sure, on paper the new card is not at all as good as the GeForce, but I use my computer not for gaming, but at work for GIS and image processing, and so far, I see no problem in using the "lesser" ATI card. I will, however, call Dell (again) and ask for an equivalent replacement card (and test that), although I would rather have some other compensation.

I hope I don't have to update this thread again; that means all works. Good luck to the rest of you.
