I know this thread hasn't been active for a little while, but i found it after weeks of hunting through forums looking for the answer to my high DPC usage.

my DPCs spiked whenever my LAN was active - opening a webpage even. the solution for me was to go to the following reg entry
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPI\Parameters]
and set the "Attributes" DWORD to 100 in hex.  after a reboot, i had no more spikes, FINALLY!!!

i hope this helps someone, as it caused me many weeks of frustration.

my pc:
-Vista Business x64 SP2
-MSI 790GX-G65
-AMD Phenom II 710 @2.6GHz
-6GB Corsair XMS2 DDR3
-ATi Sapphire Radeon HD 4870

Hi JonMcP,

Good to hear you were able to solve you problem.

the solution for me was to go to the following reg entry
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPI\Parameters]
and set the "Attributes" DWORD to 100 in hex
Can you indicate what inspired you to do this in the first place?

Hi Jon

Many many thanks for your post - it looks like this may be the glimmer of hope, to get my Vista Dell Studio 17 back on track for my DAW/DJ set up without horrible digital noise!

My knowledge isn't the most advanced when it comes to in depth programming/hex stuff.

I presume that once I get into  [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPI\Parameters]  I'd right click>New>DWORD (32-bit) Value...  then what?

Please help! CryLOL

Hi Joe,

I'd right click>New>DWORD (32-bit) Value

At that point, probably, you'd give the value the name of Attributes, and set its data to 100 if the hexadecimal radio button is selected, or 256 if the decimal radio button is selected.

I have found when using a virtual PC switching from Wired Network to Wireless Network causes me this grief.

sorry i haven't replied before now, i had presumed i was subscribed to this thread
and i would be emailed when a reply had been posted *embarrassed*

yeah, you were spot on the money with that explanation molotov, i apologise i didn't make it clearer.

unfortunately, after updating windows after the service pack install, the problem seems to have come back - with a worse effect than ever before.  doing anything network related (opening/refreshing a web page, etc) will spike all three cores to 100% and makes my computer unuseable until the webpage has completely loaded; whereupon the DPCs will drop back down to unnoticeable.

a strange thing though - whilst using bittorrent, DPCs will increase and max out one core, but not all three, except when adding a torrent.  i find this perculiar since bittorrent uses more network bandwidth than refreshing a web page.

seems my "fix" was only temporary :(

Sorry guys

Jon

oh, and in response to your question, molotov, i seem to remember it was a microsoft knowledge base article, though i am remiss in that i didn't bookmark which one.  it had taken me so long to find a 'cure' that once my DPCs dropped dramatically, i figured i would never need it.

more fool me - i should know by now that MS likes to kick me when i think i've fixed something

From Microsoft:

1

2

3

They don't mention Vista (yet?).

I've seen computers where that value was present (0x80 I think). In those cases 0x100 should be added, not changed to 0x100.

If only they would document the value...
