This is a guide written for people who have a basic knowledge of windows and want to know a bit more about what Process Explorer is telling them. It has been updated since the original posting to include details about the testlimits utility and some links that people have suggested.
People who want to see the full technical details should see the forum posts or buy Mark Russinovich's books that are listed here: http://blogs.technet.com/markrussinovich/about.aspx This document is designed to complement the other materials like: The Process Explorer home page here - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx The FAQ page here - http://forum.sysinternals.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=4469 To the experts - feel free to suggest corrections and I'll update it where possible. To other readers - Please use this forum to ask questions about the content of the document.
The file was scanned for viruses before it was uploaded but you should scan it before opening it. You use the document at your own risk. uploads/20071231_050055_dll_guide-publi.zip - part 1 (DLLs)

Hello, robbinma.
I would like to say thanks a lot for taking the pain of writing a guide for non-geeks, i.e. for the majority of computer users.
Let me add a minor correction nonetheless:
Actually, not quite correct. You may run P.E. as a normal user as well. Just in this case, procexp100.sys will not be loaded, and you will not be able to use P.E. to view all details related to Windows system processes. Karl |

Thanks for the response. I have started a new thread here http://forum.sysinternals.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=11044&PID=49349#49349 to discuss this.
will update the document in a couple of days when I have finished something else off. |

may I suggest tacking on these video references as well:
There's nothing better than seeing Mark and David Solomon presentations on them. Edited by jawz101 - 04 January 2008 at 11:01pm |

TODO:
Add in reference to TestLimits.exe and the possibly a reference to the sample chapter in Inside Windows about file systems etc....
Also add in the references/corrections from the people above.

Query for the moderators...
Is it worth making this sticky so it is visible for new users?
I thought it was but perhaps my last edit changed that.
Thanks

Hi, robbina.
Done. Made sticky again. Maybe the old forum software bug still exists: if a normal user edits the initial post in a sticky thread created by himself, then the thread will no longer be sticky. Thanks for investing your time and effort in explaining P.E. to non-techies.

So, are the files listed in the first post the latest files?
