goto windows explorer and then tools | options | view and check to show hidden files and folders

goto C:\WINDOWS\inf and right click on ie.inf and select install.
if it prompts for any files along the way,  search for each of them and then browse to those locations to use those files for the reinstall of Internet Explorer.

Hi, fire_rain424.

If I were in your place, I think I would backup all my data on the machine to CD or DVD. Next I would format the disk and install from the scratch.
Considering the time you seem to have spent on diagnosing and solving the issue(s), a backup and clean install may be a more efficient approach.
Just my 2 cents.

Regards,
Karl

to me it sounds like an add-on that is used in both IE and Firefox.  Have you tried a browser like Opera?  Try that next.  Then, try uninstalling Adobe Flash player and Sun Java if they are installed.  Next, upgrade to IE7.  Since you can't get IE to work, just google it from a working browser rather than using IE's builtin Windows Update function.  Then run IE and go to tools | Internet Options | Advanced| and do a reset and see if that works.
