It gets worse!
Now when I try to boot from the hard drive I get the message - Windows did not start succesfully etc. and no matter what option I choose, a blue screen flashes up then the computer reboots.  At one point I tried an XP repair installation but that didn't make any difference.

Ok, that's a login problem, not a boot problem.  Do you remember your Administrator password?  It's something you set during system installation.  It might be blank...
On the blue login screen (the one that shows your name and icon), press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice.  This should take you to a more general login screen with a dialog that lets you type in a Username and Password.  Try logging in with username Administrator and whatever your Administrator password is.  If you don't know it, try a blank password.
If you successfully log in as Administrator, open regedit,
and open the key HKEY_USERS.  Do a search for everything named AutorunsDisabled, and restore it to its original value.  Under HKEY_USERS there should be a subkey named "S-1-very long number".  One of these is your own user hive.  The "S-1-blah blah" string is your SID (security ID).  Under this key you should find some AutorunsDisabled that may be causing problems.  Especially look under the subkeys
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

After fixing these, try logging out as Administrator and logging back in as yourself.

The value "StartupPrograms" is already in rdpwd and set to rdpclip.

I never had to log in on my computer but now when I start the computer it comes up with my name and an icon to click on to log in.  It then says, loading settings, a blue screen flashes up for a microsecond then it says saving your settings and goes back to having the icon and my name on the screen.

Ok, that's a different type of autorun.  It should be under the key
ControlSet00x\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd\AutorunsDisabled

Copy the value named "StartupPrograms" to
ControlSet00x\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd

In other words, create a value "StartupPrograms" of type REG_SZ in
ControlSet00x\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd and give it a value "rdpclip".  That restores this autorun.

Is your problem that you can't boot or that you can't log in?  Because if you have trouble logging in, the faulty autorun may be in another hive - your user hive.  Do you remember which Autoruns sections you disabled?
Anyway, try restoring "rdpclip" and see if it helps.

Thanks for your quick response op9080.
I have run regedit and done as you say but I can only find one folder named AutorunsDisabled and it contains two values:

Name = (Default), Type = REG_SZ, Data = (value not set)
Name = StrtupPrograms, Type = REG_SZ, Data = rdpclip

Thanks again for your help,
Stuart

- Boot your Bart PE CD.
- run regedit
- click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- In the menu, select File->Load Hive
- Load the Hive C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM (replace your own %SystemRoot% where C:\WINDOWS is).
- Name it "MySYSTEM" when it asks for a name.
- You'll now have a registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MySYSTEM
- Look at the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MySYSTEM\Select\Current.  This is your hive's "CurrentControlSet".  Let's assume this value is equal to 3.
- Goto to your control set's services at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MySYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services.
- Search for the string "AutorunsDisabled".
- You'll find some Services that have the following values
AutorunsDisabled REG_DWORD <some_value>
Start REG_DWORD  4
- For each service like this, copy the value from <some_value> and change the "Start" value to be <some_value>.  This is the original value of "Start" which Autoruns keeps as a backup.  Once you restore "Start", you can delete the "AutorunsDisabled" value.
- Do this for each service under Services.
- After you're done, click on "MySYSTEM" under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
- From menu do File->Unload Hive.
- Close regedit and reboot.

I ran Autoruns for the first time and disabled what I thought were a few useless processes that were checking for software updates etc.
Now my computer won't boot into Windows XP.  I get a message saying, loading your settings, the blue screen of death flashes up then I get a message saying saving your settings.  I never had to login in before and I can't get into safe mode.  I have a PE Builder bootable CD and I can boot from that.  Any ideas where to go next?

Thanks,
Stuart
