Hello, Seree.
What happens if you press Escape while the scanning is taking place?
Would you care to try profiling with DW, this time not checking any boxes?
You could certainly try other SI utilities. Process Monitor might be quite useful to get a trace from, if not simply to get the exit code of Autoruns (which DW would provide, were Autoruns to crash while you were profiling it)...

Good morning Molotov, I ran it with DW and it works just fine. No error.
I don't know if this makes a difference, but the error occurs immediantly following the finish of Autoruns loading all of the startup programs. Not during the loading.
I only have a little while this morning as I have class at 9:30am. Currently, it is 7:45am my time. I will return around 11:30am.
I wonder why DW works correctly but Autoruns won't. Just an idea, but what do you think of my downloading another utility from Systernals and seeing if it works correctly? I have been meaning to download Process Explorer and Process Monitor, to continue learning how to use them properly.
Thank you, Seree

From your email:
Now, again, if you profile c:\autoruns\autoruns.exe with DW, checking all boxes except for "Use simple thread numbers...", does Autoruns work or does it produce the "abnormal program termination" message? If the latter, please ZIP the .DWI and upload the ZIP file somewhere (RapidShare would work). Edited by molotov - 05 February 2008 at 7:00pm |

Excellent. Now, what happens when you run Autoruns.exe from the c:\autoruns folder?

I created the folder C:\Autoruns and unzipped the package into it. I then had four items as listed in your last post. I then moved Autoruns.zip into that folder, so now there are five items inside of it. The version on these is version 9.1
OK, now should I Restore that version 9.2 to the desktop and somehow upload it to you?
I just received your PM and am happy to send it to you. I will do so here very shortly.
Thank you, Seree

Let's get on common ground by moving the Autoruns folder on your desktop to the root of the C: drive. My instructions suggested saving autoruns.zip to C:\Autoruns, such that when the ZIP file was extracted there you would have 5 files. So long as when you are done with the exercise you have 4 files in C:\Autoruns - autoruns.chm, autoruns.exe, autorunsc.exe, eula.txt - and autoruns.exe and autorunsc.exe are both version 9.1.0.0.
So, to summarize, let's get you to the point that you have the following files in C:\Autoruns:
autoruns.exe (version 9.1.0.0)
autorunsc.exe (version 9.1.0.0)
autoruns.chm
eula.txt |

I don't want to delete anything else or mess with the Autoruns downloads I currently possess, because I am concerned about "losing" this odd Autoruns version 9.2 you are interested in. I attempted to open the file from within the recycle bin, but it won't allow me to, so I believe I would need to rename or move the most current download, right click the one in the recycle bin and select Restore to have access to it again.
Can I use RapidShare to upload this version 9.2 for you to access? I am only now learning how to upload files to the internet.
Please let me know how to proceed.
Thank you, Seree

OK, I downloaded another package, and unzipped it into a folder on my desktop called Autoruns. (I kept the other in my recycle bin because you may want to look at it)
The version on this one is 9.1. as you said it should be, however, it is now back to the original error:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Abnormal program termination
OK, I just received your updated email post. I have it on my desktop, should I simply delete the currect folder on my desktop and go ahead and unzip into the folder in C:\ you requested? Or is this moot now that I have one with version 9.1?
Oh, my folder only has four items: Autoruns, exe; Autorunsc.exe, Autoruns.chm; and Eula.txt. Is this normal? I downloaded from the bottom of the page.
Thank you, Seree

Can you please humor me with the following?
1) Go to the SI Autoruns page
2) Click the "Download Autoruns and Autorunsc (490 KB)" link on the right side of the page
3) Save the file in a folder named "Autoruns" off of the root of the C drive (C:\Autoruns), so the path to the ZIP file will be C:\Autoruns\Autoruns.zip. You will likely need to create the Autoruns folder; if not, and the folder exists, ensure that it is empty.
4) Extract the contents of c:\autoruns\autoruns.zip to C:\Autoruns. When you are done, there should be 5 files in C:\Autoruns:
+ autoruns.chm
+ autoruns.exe
+ autorunsc.exe
+ Eula.txt
+ autoruns.zip
5) Right-click Autoruns.exe, choose Properties, and select the "Version" tab. What is displayed at the top of the tab, next to "File version:"?
6) Right-click Autorunsc.exe, choose Properties, and select the "Version" tab. What is displayed at the top of the tab, next to "File version:"?

That is where I downloaded my packages from too. Right from the Systernals AutoRun page. Down at the bottom of the page. I wonder what is going on here? I don't know where else to download Systernals programs from, and I wouldn't download from anywhere else anyway, as I am a bit mistrustfull of offerings not on the original download forum(s). Unless it is CNET, which I use to research certain download offerings. One of my research methods anyway. I don't trust too much software on the net, I do a lot of research prior to putting anything on my system, what with all the malware out.
Thank you, Seree
