Using the earlier version:
I deleted the registry branch (it asked me to agree to things when I started it again) but it went straight back to high CPU. Also change update time but performance sucked. Using 11.20 Installed, rebooted, deleted the registry branch & thus far the CPU usage is stable. Hopefully this keeps me quiet! Edited by mubbled - 04 June 2008 at 4:51pm |

Hi mubbled,
Please note that the current version of Process Explorer is 11.20.
Have you tried any of the troubleshooting steps presented earlier in this topic?

I'm getting this problem too and have been for the last couple of months. I kill ProcExp and my CPU reverts to normal again.
To restore nomallity, I reboot. I tend to leave my machine on for weeks at a time and in that period I can usually use ProcExp and all is well. Today it really bugged me coz it started hogging all the CPU even after I rebooted. Am on Win XP SP3, running PE version 11.13. I guess it's something local, otherwise everyone would be screaming about this. I upgraded ProcExp to 11.13 in an attempt to fix this so I did notice it back in 8.something. Maybe it's down to an MS service pack/shared library kind of thing? |

Oh and yeah, my personal experiences are that the update speed can be the cause for PE's high CPU consumption, for example I got used to set/use it at 2 seconds refresh or update time/rate (and before that I used 5 seconds setting for a long time), however if I set it to 0.5 second the CPU usage of "procexp.exe" process (with lower pane closed/not shown, also not showing "Processes From All Users" and "Unnamed Handles and Mappings", and with only "Show Fractional CPU" checked) rises from normal/usual 1-2% to no less than 10% average!! You have to use a different instance of PE to get the stack for the threads in the first instance. An instance of PE will not allow you to inspect the stacks of its own threads.
@Ivan: Noticed that, too...

Well, that shouldn't happen at all since CPU priorities are relative and not absolute (meaning that just lowering the PE's priority shouldn't lower its CPU consumption); if you want to you can read the, ehm, let's say article titled "PROCESSES AND THEIR BASE-PRIORITIES" on articles1.html page on my computing-related website ... When I clicked stack for the topmost thread, it said that a stck could not be completed for Process Explorer
When I clicked stack, The first PE was running at about 25%. The CPU usage seemed to have gone down a bit (spiking around 30%). |

procexp.exe is Process Explorer. On a 32-bit system, it is the only process related to PE.
Wasn't sure if you were having high CPU usage problems and were using Process Explorer to troubleshoot, or if you were having CPU usage problems with Process Explorer. Now that we've established that it's the latter, and since we've already been through removing the settings...
Please configure symbols in PE, and then launch a second instance of PE. Use the second instance of PE to inspect the first instance - go to the properties of the first instance of procexp.exe, and then go to the Threads tab. Sort by CSwitch Delta (descending), and get the full stack of the topmost thread.

Yes, it is procxp.exe
Sorry for not stating that as I thought procxp.exe was the only PE related process. |
