John,
The Process Explorer settings registry key was pointed out in the topic that I initially directed you to (Process Explorer - High CPU utilization?) and indirectly referenced twice more in this very topic.
Sorry you had to dig for it, but good to hear you have resolved the problem.

It took me a while to uncover what registry entries you were referring to, but once I did that solved the problem. Thanks! Just so the next person to read this doesn't have to do their own searches, the registry entry which needs to be removed is: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sysinternals\Process Explorer]Apparently removing this solves a plethora of ailments! In my mind, based off of the presented information, Process Explorer has not yet been identified as the culprit. By asking further questions, I'm attempting to gather more information. Even if procexp.exe CPU usage goes through the roof (which is still not confirmed), it may be caused by other modules loaded into the address space of procexp.exe - perhaps a DLL from a monitor utility package, for example.
Further, exiting PE, removing the registry settings, and restarting PE, has resolved similar issues in the past. Have you attempted this, as described in the aforementioned topic? Edited by molotov - 04 June 2008 at 8:39am |

The problem is definitely with rotation and Hide When Minimized. All I have to do is push the rotate button on my computer to get the CPU to run wild. When Hide When Minimized isn't checked, everything works fine. So for now, I simply don't use the Hide When Minimized.
I'm not so much looking for a solution (I have a work around). I wanted to alert the developer to the issue, and to help anyone else having a 100% CPU problem so they'll know this will cause it.

Have you tried any of the troubleshooting ideas from the other topic? Please indicate what you've tried, and the results.
It is implied that procexp.exe is the process going to 100% when you rotate, but not completely clear that this is the case. Can you confirm (using Process Explorer or Task Manager)?

Using Process Explorer v11.13 with XP Pro (SP3).
Just now upgraded to v11.20, but the problem is still present. Edited by John_Mc - 04 June 2008 at 7:50am |

Hi John,
What version of Process Explorer are you using, and on what operating system?
Have a look at this topic for troubleshooting ideas:

When using my tablet PC (Fujitsu Lifebook) the CPU goes to 100% whenever I change the screen orientation (ie rotate 90°) if Process Explorer is running and it is set to Hide When Minimized.
