Hi Stuart,

Have you tried forcing a reinstall of the Windows Update Agent?  Use the /wuforce command-line switch...

I'm on XP Service Pack 3 (so I have KB927891 installed), and whenever I turn Automatic Updates on a Windows Update Automatic Updates dedicated process AND a svchost thread double-team me to rapidly allocate all of my ram until they exhaust it, at which point they free it and repeat the process (causing me to have a sawtooth-wave RAM usage graph). The update stuff itself never happens.
