Note: do not attach to VHDs on the same system on which you created them if you plan on booting from them. If you do so, Windows will assign the VHD a new disk signature to avoid a collision with the signature of the VHD’s source disk. Windows references disks in the boot configuration database (BCD) by disk signature, so when that happens Windows booted in a VM will fail to locate the boot disk.

Can I create a VHD from my current machine, create a new Virtual PC and attach this VHD to this Virtual PC and then run Virtual PC on my current machine? This would mean I have a virtual copy of my current machine or does this also create these disk signature conflicts?

This warning has nothing to do with using the generated VHD file with virtualization software like VPC/VS/Hyper-V/VirtualBox/VMware etc. The warning is specifically related to Windows 7/Server 2008 R2, both of which provide the ability to mount a VHD file so that it appears to the underlying OS as another physical disk. This is the operation that is being warned about.
I'm not sure if the same warning applies when using vhdmount.

You are right about Win7, in my case it is Windows XP though. Further down on the Disk2vhd page there is a screenshot of a virtual copy of a host system running on the host system, so I am just assuming it works and I will give it a go.

My understanding was that with Win7/R2 you can now boot the host machine directly from a VHD, and it was this use case that is not supported. I could be wrong though...
