Hi - found this utility yesterday and ran straight home after work to try it out.
I ran it on my wife's XP partition (E:) and it completed fine. I then created a new VPC and added the newly created vhd. When I tried to boot it quickly greeted me with the message: "A Disk Read Error Occurred". Only option from here was to ctrlaltdel to reboot. I ensured that the virtual harddrive was the first boot device on the vpc system but this did not help. Can anyone help? Any suggestions much appreciated. Karl |

I have got an IDE drive but no windows OS on it so can't test that idea.
I am guessing this is a fairly new util (i looked into this a few months ago and could not find any free tools to do this) so no doubt there will be updates that may address the issues. |

@ intoxicat
U wrote that U tried it on your's wife XP on Partition E.
Is that where U create your VHD ??
If so, is the disk a IDE or SATA ??
Would help me to figure this out.....
I tried this on two different Pc's ( laptops )
one was the Lenovo ( IBM ) who has failed -> Error = A Disk Read Error Occured
the other is a Dell D600 who is running just fine
- The Lenovo machine is a T 60 with 2 processors AND a SATA Drive
- The Dell is just a Pentium 4 with a IDE drive

You said you created a VHD from the E drive partition so would I be right in assuming that C drive contains the boot loader and menu to start XP from E drive??
If that's the case then you have a hard drive image with no boot loader you will need an XP install CD to fix that. Start Virtual PC but boot from the CD-ROM drive or ISO image, run Recovery Console and enter the Windows password or just "Enter" if blank. Type the following commands: fixmbr and fixboot Restart Virtual PC and see if your hard drive will now boot Windows XP. Richard S. |

@Redhawk,
I am sure I didn't create a VHD from the E partition.
I Created mine from the Bootdrive which is in mine case C:\
So this one does have a bootloader etc etc...
Still receiving the " A Disk Read Error Occured" error
As I googled for this, there were many suggestions to do FIXMBR etc etc, that
is why I think that this had something to do with SATA. Hope someone has a solution... thanks

thanks redhawk . I tried what you adviced. fixmbr ran successfully but fixboot failed with this message:
"FIXBOOT cannot find the system drive or the drive specified is not valid." Something weird is clearly going :) After trying the above I am still getting the same error message. I also tried to recreate the vhd using v1.2 and win7.

I have tried to use DISK2VHD on three different computers now and get same "Disk Read Error Occurried". I tried latest version 1.2 on one of the computers and get same issue.
In all cases .vhd was created from boot drive C:
One one of the computers the .vhd created is twice the size as the used space on disk. Anyone know what might cause that?

I've not encountered any Disk Read Errors so I can only assume that something is wrong with the boot loader or the files haven't been copied correctly.
The only other thing I could suggest is if you have a floppy disk drive create a start up disk for Virtual PC and use it directly or as an imaged file. To create a start up disk just format a floppy disk in XP using the format from the DOS Prompt or with Windows Explorer. Next copy 3 hidden files from the hard drive C:\NTDETECT.COM and C:\NTLDR C:\boot.ini to the floppy drive. Finally edit A:\boot.ini make sure it points to the correct hard drive and partition for Windows. The following \boot.ini example is a dual boot configuration for XP and NT4 running from 2 different hard drives:
