I have a request. It should be able to make a restore disk so a hard drive could be restored from another hard drive or network location.

"Here's one MAJOR request: the ability to run an image on the machine you imaged it for"
ditto, working at all would be a nice feature

"This is beyond frustrating"
marks tools are free
perhaps you can do better
no doubt, this is the worst one he has ever created

Here's one MAJOR request: the ability to run an image on the machine you imaged it for.

I made 3 separate backups before loading Windows 7, since I wanted to have a clean install:
  1. Disk2VHD
  2. Windows NT Backup ("backup" on Windows XP)
  3. VMWare image

Naturally, I thought I'd just grab any files I need off one of the _three_ backups.

I can't use the VHD because I'm trying to boot/mount it on the machine it was created on, which Disk2VHD can't do.

I can't use the backup because Windows 7's backup won't read the files, and the Windows NT Backup utility won't work on 7: MS removed the service that Backup needs in order to rest

So, I'm now down to hoping that my VMWare image is good, or that it can use one of the two other backups.  Or that I can find all my disks and set up a new virtual machine, then restore off of an XP install

This is beyond frustrating.  I can't imagine that my image-the-drive-I'm-installing-onto idea is a unique one.

First of all, Disk2vhd is a fantastic tool. Congratulations guys.

Some suggestions though for the next version...
  1. The ability to select the volume you want to create a VHD file from is good, but by default the created VHD is the size of the *disk* and includes partitioning information. It would be great if there was a checkbox along the lines of "create a VHD the size of the volume" instead that also *didn't* transfer the partitioning information.
  2. Even *better*, and especially useful for volumes larger than 127GB but with less actual data, would be an additional option to shrink the volume size to below 127GB to allow it to boot under Hyper-V or Virtual PC. This can be done with DISKPART using SHRINK, but within the tool would be awesome.
  3. Disk2vhd v1.3 introduced changes to update the boot loader and to install the Intelide driver which were very welcome. Windows Vista SP1 and above automatically disable disk drivers that are not used, so to make more Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate and Windows Server 2008 R2 Disk2vhd VHD images bootable as Native VHD Boot as well as with Hyper-V and Virtual PC, it would be great if the msahci driver could be set to SERVICE_BOOT_START (0x0) too.
  4. With reference to using the Disk2vhd VHD image for Native VHD Boot, it would also be great to have a checkbox for enabling/disabling expand on mount for dynamic VHD images (HKLM\ControlSet001\services\FsDepends\Parameters VirtualDiskExpandOnMount REG_DWORD 4 to disable)
I realise these are big asks, but you know what they say, "if you don't ask..." ;-)
