for a few months now I have been trying to get chkdsk to work. Recently though I had been getting issues where it wouldn't let me run my norton 360 software (came up with some error talking about the 00email check thing wouldn't load and would close norton out)
I have got it in safe mode last night and got norton working and checked for viruses. None were found, but my defrag won't run till it runs chkdsk. I searched for this and came on this forum. I searched for the exe file in the first page, but it says on my comp that it cannot be found.

I haven't tried it all cause I have a job to go to and really don't have much time for playing around on it. I will post more about it tonight when I get back.

Yes, oli_ver - a corrupted autochk.exe program file could certainly be one of the causes of an inability to run chkdsk, but it need not be the only one...

meant to quote the above in my last post

Ran a system restore to a pre-diskkeeper time (I had only had it on there for about 3 weeks so no big deal). no help either, so i undid that sys-restore.

Then I ran "File Signature Verification Tool" from System Information.  autochk.exe showed up in the not digitally signed list. So, just to see, I did the same thing on another XP box that had been installed just last week and autochk.exe did not appear in the list there.

The fix (well, for me anyway.. just thought I'd share): copy autochk.exe from install disk ([drive]:\i386\autochk.exe) to %windir%\system32. Et Voila! All happy again! :)

I would like to point out that this is a very common problem which explains why chkdsk does not run on bootup.

Autochk is the file that window uses in the process of invoking chkdsk (or something like that :) )

If autochk is corrupt (or simply the wrong version, or unsigned) then windows ignores it and chkdsk never runs! Simple! Windows thinks that it is protecting itself.

Therefore run the tool specified here:-

http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1056029.html

and check that autochk is verified by windows. If it's not then you will need to replace it with the version off the CD that windows was installed with.

Extract it off the windows CD and overwrite your existing.

Thanks for this thread - very useful.
I encountered same issue - chkdsk /f will not run at system restart, no screen display or log of why, no spyware/a/v etc software to acct for issue.  Did boot into safe mode to run chkdsk /f - that resolved issue.

I've read the entire thread even the posts that aren't really related to the issue at hand.  That's why I chose to post here. Lots of good solid things to try.  Just none of them seem to be working on this machine.

I'm exactly on the same boat!

I do not and did not have any of the listed offending software.
BootExecute key is correct.
I marked C volume dirty, and run chkntfs /D.
autchk.exe is same as on windows cd, as are chkdsk.exe and chkntfs.exe
chkdsk simply won't run on reboot.

I'm not even trying to do safe mode run, because that wont solve the problem.

My guess, is that there is some offending device driver loaded, which prevents chkdsk run.

Question is - which one..

Ahem.  Yes.  What molotov says is correct.  (That’s probably how he earned all his stars.)  I was in error.

Still, if you’re going to go to all this trouble, by all means use
CHKDSK C: /R
“/R implies /F”.  I stand corrected.

Just be sure to fix your sectors.  Otherwise, the whole exercise is a waste.

And if you do have to disable your security software,
  1. take your machine offline
  2. be sure to properly re-enable the security software before you place it online again
  3. be smart: keep notes of everything you do so that you can undo it again later

Yes, there does not appear to be a way to "code" a list, as you indicated.  But, the toolbar feature does work (after you get out of "Quick Reply" mode and into the more "feature-packed" editor)...
Ah, yes:
  1. I can see it in “Quote” mode.
  2. Thank you, molotov. There are a great number of useful formatting options.

With McAfee, the best that I'm able to do (short of uninstallation or manually disabling drivers and services in the registry) is disable the active scanner until the next reboot. I'm gonna try contacting McAfee support and see if they can help me with this.
