Did you get the system to work in the end? Or did you just reinstall it and some think like that.

Sounds rather as if Explorer is hanging, perhaps loading a shell extension. One could try selectively disabling them one at a time.

Can you load task manager while hung? Try CTRL+SHIFT+ESC while it's hung to see if you can get task manager to load.

From a remote system, try running PSLIST -S to see which processes are running on the system while it appears hung, if any. If one single process seems to be jamming up the works, run PSKILL to stop the process, or even PSSUSPEND. If you have the Enterprise version of The MonTools, you can use those to view filesystem and registry activity at this time as well.

Recently I have been plagued by an unusual system hang. After
logging in, I can see my wallpaper and my mouse pointer but that is
where the boot stops. The system will not respond to ANY
input. The drives are quiet and I have waited up to 30 minutes
with no change. I am forced to power off. Rebooting results
in the same behavior as does logging in with different profiles.
I can login via Safe Mode. The strange thing is that if I leave
the computer powered off all night or all day while I'm at work, when I
return, I can login just fine. My Norton AV is up to date and I
have run 3 different malware scanners as well as cleaning and
defragging the registry with Registry Mechanic. I am not quite
sure how to go about diagnosing the problem and I thought someone here
at Sysinternals might be able to help.
