I had the same problem and i searched for days for a solution thats how i can upon this forum, i tried all the suggested fixes to no avail. Then i thought i would sysprep as it clears SID's.

To run sys prep what i had to do was:
1.) log onto the PC using safemode with command prompt.
2.) type in explorer in the command prompt.
3.) in my computer explore windows cd and copy the TOOLS folder to c:\
4.) in the tools folder there is a DEPLOY.cab right click on it and select EXTRACT TO and extract it to the tools folder. (this will create a new folder called deploy).
5.) open the deploy folder and run sysprep.
6.) select factory seal. The pc will shut down once this is completed.
7.) when the PC shuts down start it back up in normal mode. Once it has started up reboot the PC.

To err is human - and to blame it on a computer is even more so.

Interesting thought, IZ-ZY!

I've read about sysprep, but never used it myself.  Your suggestion makes sense, since sysprep wipes the Security Identifiers (SIDs).

I'm guessing that you would skip setupmgr.exe, and use only sysprep.exe, is that right?

I no longer have the machine in question, so I can't try it out, but, for future reference, can you please be specific about how to use sysprep in this situation?

Thanks!

What you can do is sysprep the machine.

I agree, gaana.  But I've finally given up, and admitted defeat.  It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I just cannot waste infinite time on this.

Microsoft says that since a reinstall works the problem is solved.  I replied that they have a bug to fix, but they apparently don't agree - they didn't even reply.

Yes you are missing the answer. Answer will be - you are going wrong way.

p.s. To not posting again, right "legal" way - reinstall, or ASR

Other way - as MP_ART said - C R A C K I N G

I think, it is impossible to understand algorithm of WPA by tracing it with Filemon/RegMon (pushing "OK"/"Cancel"/"Apply" buttons and watching results in fs/reg monitors).
It is same as manual C R A C K I N G
Do not listen the words like:

rename the WPA.DBL file and expand the same from the cd.

do you see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\RESET5

go to start --run and type---c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a      .............it will say windows is activated or not

Automatic System Restore - Windows setup ask you for launch fresh install, ASR or exit. But as I read you don't have any disks, so it is can not be a solution for your problem.

WPA uses mechanisms that affect on Windows in WHOLE, not only on some registry keys or files (even if they contains WPA in name). Or you think in MS so stupid programmers that made defence which can be deactivated by any user with RegMon/FileMon?

First Windows XP release can be actived by simply patching winlogon.exe. But for this time security was slightly improved. You will no success with Registry/Files. This problem requires higher level of solution.
