Downloaded the software earlier today and just tried to create a VHD of my old XP SP3 system to use in my new Win7 as virutal.

After selecting the volume to create a VHD of and the location  to place it (USB attached disk) when I hit the create button the program errors out "Error snapshoting volume: catastrophic error"

The help file included does not work so I am dead in the water.

Any ideas

I saw this from a Symantec website...  When I enabled both of these services.  The program started to work.  Hope this helps.

it should be ensured that the "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" service and the "Volume Shadow Copy" service are running.

cmd in C:\windows\system32

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

vssadmin list providers
vssadmin list writers
(both of these above commands returned a list of providers and writers)

---reboot, test backup, didn't work---

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

vssvc /register

regsvr32 /i swprv.dll (got an error on this one after about 5 minutes)
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll

regsvr32 msxml.dll

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

regsvr32 msxml4.dll (not found)

vssadmin list providers
vssadmin list writers
(this time, the list of providers and writers was blank. Oops.)

---reboot, test backup, didn't work---

--reboot again----
net stop vss

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

vssvc /register

regsvr32 /i swprv.dll (successful this time)
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

vssadmin list providers
vssadmin list writers
(both of these above commands returned a list of providers and writers)

Quote The help file included does not work so I am dead in the water.
Sounds like a common behavior that is encountered with CHM files that are downloaded from the Internet.  Please see this.

You Have NO IDEA How much this helped!! After realizing that I had Tune Up Utilities so called 'PC Booster'(Optimization) ON.... I then remembered that it cut off services not needed. I immediately turned it off and tried starting it... what do you know... IT WORKED WITHOUT REBOOT!!! These were the Microsoft Volume Shadow Services and rarely used ones Tune-Up cut off... if you forget you have it on... it can cost you so much time... Thank you so much for posting that! I tried everything from uninstalling programs to going into reg-edit to see if there was anything wrong.I wish I came to your post earlier!!! I will now be able to enjoy my arriving 256 Gb ssd coming in the mail (vs. the 64 bit I have now) and can now transfer my whole windows 8 to the other drive thanks to you!!!!
