(Props to Karlchen for collecting much of this info)

*** FAQ: Common ProcessExplorer Issues ***

  1. Where can I download the latest ProcessExplorer version?

Please visit the Process Explorer webpage. The download links are at the bottom of the page.

  2. Where can I download previous ProcessExplorer versions?

Sorry, at the time of writing Sysinternals do not offer an archive of old programme versions. Just follow this procedure before downloading a new version: E.g. your current version is v9.25 and you are about to download v10.06. Backup your current download file as ProcessExplorer925.zip before downloading the new ProcessExplorerNt.zip.

  3. How do I install ProcessExplorer?

Please read W2K Pro. Not only applicable to Win2K, but to other Windows versions as well.

  4. How do I upgrade Process Explorer?

    Please see how to upgrade.

  5. Why does the ProcessExplorer help not work?

Please read Process Explorer "Help" problem.

You're not serious about this, are you? Ok, then please read uninstall.

  9. How do I re-activate the Process Tree inside ProcessExplorer?

You're not able to activate the process tree? Why is the Process Tree not Visible in ProcessExplorer?.

  10. Where does ProcessExplorer store its settings?

Please read Where is the user dependant settings-file.
    To cut it short:
P.E. stores its settings inside the regkey HKCU\Software\Sysinternals\Process Explorer, not in a file.
Settings are remembered across sessions only if - after changing settings - you exit P.E. once using File => Exit.

  11. Will it work on 64bit Windows versions?

Please read pslist and Server 2003 - Enterprise X64 and look for "ProcessExplorer".

  12. Will it work on 64bit Itanium machines?

Up to v10.06: Definitely no. Please see Mark's statements on Sysinternals and Itanium in this thread: IA-64 bit version of regmon.
Starting with v10.1 P.E. also offers
    Windows 64-bit for Itanium support
(cf. the section "What's new in Version 10.1:" here, please.)

  13. Handle leak in PE

You have got .NET Framework installed on your Windows system?! Please read
    + Handle leak in PE.
+ Handle "leak" in Process explorer.
    + Handle leak with VS2005 / .NET 2.0.
You may also do a search for "net framework" using the Forum Search Button.

  14. How do I integrate Dependancy Walker in ProcessExplorer?

You have got Dependancy Walker installed and P.E., but P.E. will not offer the item "Launch Depends ..." when you right click on a process?

  17. ProcessExplorer Won't Open Browser

  22. Process Explorer 10.21 aborts on start (.NET Framework and Registry Patrol Issue)

Provided you have .NET framework installed and you use some registry cleanup tool like e.g. Registry Patrol, this tool may be over-zealous and corrupt the .NET registry entries. This in turn may lead to P.E. startup problems or crashes.
Cf. Process Explorer 10.21 aborts on start.

  23. Process Explorer won't load / crashes on start

If you are experiencing problems running Process Explorer, you might have a look in Problems with PE ... for an idea.  If you continue to have problems, the crash details might be along the lines of the following.
