I am retired semiconductor apps engineer, EE technical, but not MS Windows 10 expert.
My ASUS laptop is a great system when it is working.
But, I suspect that lots of apps are running in the background - Windows Defender? File Explorer indexing? Backups? Syncs? Who knows??
The result is that this laptop computer starts out at POR working at an acceptable speed.
Then it just gets slower & slower - and the response time to a click to change Firefox tabs can be several minutes long!
Obviously, un-useable at that speed.

SYSTEM SPECS
ASUS laptop
ACPI x64-based PC
HDD WDC WD5000LPVX-80VOTTO
277 GB used out of 465 GB
Windows 10 Home edition
Intel Pentium CPU 2117U @1.80 Ghz
RAM 4.00 GB
64-bit OS, x64-based processor

INTERNET connection via NetGear wifi router
802.11n
WPA2-Personal
Band: 2.4 GHz
Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter

My QUESTION - What is step# 1 to start understanding this system & make it perform as fast as possible?
Thank you for any suggestions.

Step 1: Run Process Explorer as administrator and investigate everything (processes and loaded .DLLs and drivers (the System process shows drivers in the lower pane)) that is not signed by Microsoft.

Step 2: Run Process Monitor and look for unusual filesystem activity on a idle system.

You can pause indexing but it should not cause issues over a long time period.
